When I say ambient I do not mean chill out/trip hop ambient I mean the kind of soundscapes you would expect to hear in a game or film such as silent hill, subtle but you are still aware of it.I have been doing so for a while now but using external equipment such as my guitars and bass and very little vst input. I want to shy away from using my gear and focus solely on vst's simply because I am aiming more at soundtracks and scores and as I am a home (and beginner) recorder I want it to have a bit more of that 'everything is consistent' kind of feel but my problem is I just do not know where to start. I have plenty of ambient pads but no clue on how to use them really to create the sounds I want and for the most part they are kind of corny and hokey, more Plan 9 than Aliens kind of sound.track of the style I mean (not done by me in anyway), but not at all limited to this, what would you do to take the same basic sound of this and make it darker and colder?Any help is greatly appreciated, you're all beautiful.

The example you’ve posted sounds like it was created with „Paul Stretch“. That little software speeds down imported samples to extreme lenghts and creates sweet shimmering and long drone/ambient sounds. It’s really a fun tool playing around with. (Plus: It’s also free)So what you could do is: Record different samples (this could be anything from a few spoken words to piano, synth or guitar parts), export them and import them into your DAW. You can stack and layer them up, add reverb and delay effects or pitch them up and down.

You could also create your drone samples and import them into a sampler or granular synthesis plugin and make your own instruments.Check out some of the links:. Paul Stretch is the go-to tool for Ambient. You can make a fairly complex short loop usually without percussive elements (sometimes they can give interesting results too) and stretch it to get an evolving and interesting soundscape.

Delay-based effects, like flangers or choruses and phasers, are great to use on the original sound, as they sound interesting when stretched. Also sounds recorded from nature are great sources.Another thing I sometimes do is just hit record and mess around with the knobs on a synth and various different effects. When I'm done, I just cut out and save the interesting parts and delete the rest. I just bought Feedback 2 & Generative 2, which are designed for just that. Cheap, and effective. You could also use a granular synth of any kind, or Izotope Iris.Stretch something in a good engine like Pro Tools and you also get some good scapes. Just verb them out heavily. I know there are better software for this.
