I kind of thought the least time consuming and easiest way would be to download GM files of the songs we would need. I’ve NEVER used GM files and no absolutely nothing about them except drums are on channel 10. So, here are my questions:1) Do I have to pay for them to get useful ones/high quality? I suppose you have to imagine from the demos what they’d sound like with ES voices.2) Where is the best place to look? Where do others get their files from? Is there a good free site?3) Is this the right way to proceed or is there an easier way?

I simply don’t have time to sequence every part for the 30-40 songs we play at each gig. Thanks and Merry Christmas! Total Posts: 0Joined status: NewcomerRe: General Midi FilesMerry Christmas, Mike!Like you, I’m not much of a midi file user. I have had some luck with loading some internet GM stuff into Sonar and working that way. I can assign Motif voices there, etc. But again, very limited in my case - and mostly just for listening to some really great piano players and screwing around.Anyway, I asked a similar question here a while ago about Christmas Music, linked In addition to the few there, I can recommend /url for classical stuff.

Some really good piano players in there. In general I found arrangement type midi files - at least the ones I have found - to be pretty stinky. No groove at all. Very “square” and quantized to perfection, if you know what I mean.Like my first piano teacher (a very rigid, unsmiling 300 year old woman) played themGood luck.Bob. Total Posts: 1460Joined status: GuruRe: General Midi FilesMerry Christmas Bob!Thanks for the input. I have seen and heard some people use them and sound quite good, so I know they’re out there and it’s possible to sound good using them.

I guess I’m just wondering where these folks get their files and what they do to sound good. I saw a band a few months ago with guitar, bass and drums and it sounded like they had the Chicago horns playing with them. I’m not sure what GM device they were using, but I think it was Roland something. Anyhow, Merry Christmas! Total Posts: 1662Joined status: GuruRe: General Midi FilesHey, GangSometimes, GM is the only way to get a song that one is not familiar with.

I have seen it many times: Two days before the gig, the mother of the bride asks for, ‘Can You Suck My Soul for Me’, by Faith Hill. And the keyboard player says, “What the.?”And the song is readily available in GM. So, you just download it, tweak it a bit, show up at the gig, and hit ‘Start’. Nobody is watching the keyboard player anyway, and the first dance goes off without a hitch. If it’s a solo gig, or the band is used to playing to a click track, then it’s totally easy street. But, bands often do not like to play to click tracks.

And, the Harry Fox agency and others are clamping down on MIDI websites that offer pop songs for download. But, it’s still the wild, wild, west out here.

You can still find just about any song in GM form if you look for it long enough. And the free downloads are every bit as good as the ‘commercial’ GM songs available in the back of Keyboard magazine, etc. I’ve had friends that paid good bucks and sent away for these things, and said, “Yick, these suck.

Who sequenced this?”And, so, it’s totally hit or miss, but very effective if you find the right sequences. There are still GM search engines out there, but as I mentioned, they are going the way of Napster. Here’s one: /urlBut just do a search on Google for ‘.mid’ or ‘MIDI songs’, or ‘Britney Spears MIDI’ or whatever, and you’ll keep coming up with new results as long as you keep submitting different queries.

Get ‘em while you can! Total Posts: 0Joined status: NewcomerRe: General Midi FilesMike,At one time, there were countless MIDI sites to choose fromit was all the rage. These sites offered free MIDI files for download and, every once in a while, you’d find good, to excellent quality MIDI files.

However, the majority of sites offering popular songs have dried up, many due to potential copyright infringement issues. There are still a lot of MIDI sites out there but in my opinion the better ones that have survived are dedicated to other genres such as jazz, classical, ragtime, etc.One thing to consider is that searching the Internet for an acceptable quality MIDI file for a particular song can be very time consuming.

Additionally, you invariably have to search through a lot of crap. I usually discard most of the free files because, for my purposes they are of inferior and unacceptable quality. I’m guessing that I probably keep one out of every eight or ten files I download. When it comes to assuring quality MIDI files, it usually comes down to, “you get what you paid for”. For this reason, if I don’t have time to sequence the song myself, I turn to commercial MIDI sites that sell professional quality MIDI files. For one stop shopping, a great site for commercial standard MIDI files is “TranTracks”. Tran Whitley’s web site hosts a large collection of SMFs from 10 different providers, including his own SMF library. The site is found at:/urlThe following libraries are the best in my opinion:1) Arrangers Series2) Heavenly Music3) Tran TracksAlso, if you have a Yamaha tone generator that supports Yamaha’s XG format, I highly recommend anything from Yamaha’s XG MIDI Song Files library. The library contains over 200 titles from all musical styles.

Unfortunately, the library is now out-of-date, as it hasn’t been kept current. However, if you’re looking for a pop song that’s 5 or more years old, you might find at here:/urlJust be warned, the Yamaha XG MIDI files are programmed for use with a sound module that supports XG. Fortunately, if you’re comfortable with SYSEX, it’s a straightforward matter to modify the files for use with a non-XG sound module. The Yamaha site also sells MIDI files from other libraries.

The “European Song Collection” is quite good. The site also offers MIDI files from “Tune 1000” and “Song Dog Music”.

These can be found at:/urlIn addition to /url, I sometimes use. /url Just be cautioned that most of the tunes at Ron Fry’s site do not include melody tracks, and/or sometimes are missing some of the solo tracks.rrledm. Total Posts: 1662Joined status: GuruRe: General Midi FilesrrledmGood info. Glad to hear the commercial midi files have improved. Luckily, there’s still plenty of good pop and rock GM files (often called ‘midis’) out there.

Just off the top of my head, I typed ‘greenonions.mid’ and, found it in no time:/urlThat version of Green Onions was not too shabby, either. OK, I’ll try another one. Something newer.

OK.Britney Ooops, I did it again. I’ll try ‘ooops.mid’. Here goesFewer results than the ‘Green Onions’ search, but here’s one:/urlNot the best version possible, but, hey enough so I could, say, learn the tune (arrrrgh!). So, the freebies are still out there.

Glad the commercial ones have become more useable, too. Total Posts: 0Joined status: NewcomerRe: General Midi FilesMike,No, the Motif product line does not provide support for Yamaha’s XG format, per se. However, that doesn’t mean a XG MIDI file is completely useless to you.If a great performance was captured in creating the MIDI file (great playing, phrasing, feel, etc.) or if the MIDI file has a good brass arrangement, whatever the case, these elements won’t be affected or lost in any way when playing back the file on a Motif. In fact, compared to playback on the best XG sound module (MU2000), the XG MIDI file will invariably “sound” a lot better when played back on a Motif. This is because the Motif represents a quantum leap forward in technology.the sounds are a lot better, the effects are a lot better, etc.

But even the Motif can’t overcome a MIDI file that was created by unskilled players.About 98% of the information contained in any MIDI file (note ON/OFF, velocity, standard controllers, basic reverb/chorus, etc.) is common to all sound modules. The issue with playing back an XG MIDI file on a Motif is that any/all XG specific settings will be lost.Think of XG as a computer language that allows you to alter and/or program various MIDI settings (parameters).

This includes EQ, effects processing and most everything that you would want to do both with regard to tweaking the instrument sounds (voices) and “mastering” the MIDI file to sound a certain way on an XG compatible sound module. This language, referred to as SYSEX (System Exclusive), is actually a collection of special MIDI messages that are unique to a specific family of sound modules. The problem is that the Motif doesn’t understand this XG specific “language” because the Motif has it’s own variation of the language.

Midi File Download

Thus, XG specific voices (a.k.a. Patches) and/or effects settings used in the XG MIDI file will be ignored by the Motif. This can sometimes produce undesired results. The good news is that it’s usually straightforward to get around these issues. Most everything you could program using XG SYSEX can be done with an equally end-result on a Motif. Other than having to reset a few instrument voices, the simplest approach on a Motif would be to play the XG file back and add your own processing and then save all these settings in a Motif MULTI.rrledm.

You should be able to find all these popular files on the net, but you’ll probably also find many that are mediocre. Try doing a google search using keywords like “Smooth” “MIDI” or “MID”, etc.Good sources for professional quality MIDIs files are:1) Smooth (Santana with Rob Thomas)/url = TT1124/url = European Song Collection2) Superstition - Stevie Wonder/url = HM0944/url = XG MIDI File3 Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett/url = HM0584 or TT0461/url = XG MIDI File, Tune 10004) Brickhouse – Commodores/url = TT0488/url = XG MIDI File5) Play that Funky Music - Wild CherryYou can find “Play that Funky Music” at /url, but I’m not sure either version available there is all that great.
